Construction and Materials
Kolbe Windows & Doors offers a diverse range of windows, including Awning, Casement, Double Hung, Single Hung, Sliding Horizontal, Architectural Shapes, Corner, Hopper, Tilt-Turn, Radius, and Folding windows. Each window type is designed with specific functionality and aesthetic considerations in mind, utilizing a variety of materials and construction techniques to ensure durability, performance, and visual appeal.
While specific material compositions and construction details vary across their extensive product line, Kolbe Windows & Doors generally employs high-quality materials selected for their strength, longevity, and energy efficiency. Common materials used in their window construction include:
- Wood: Often used for its natural beauty, excellent insulating properties, and ability to be shaped into intricate designs. Kolbe typically uses select, kiln-dried wood species to minimize expansion and contraction.
- Aluminum: Known for its strength, durability, and low maintenance. Aluminum is frequently used for exterior cladding or frame components, providing protection against weather elements.
- Veneers: Various wood species can be applied as veneers to provide specific aesthetic finishes.
- Composites: Engineered materials that combine different components to achieve specific performance characteristics like resistance to moisture and dimensional stability.
- Glass: High-performance glass options are integral to energy efficiency. This can include:
- Insulated Glass Units (IGUs): Comprising two or more panes of glass separated by a spacer, creating a sealed unit filled with air or an inert gas like argon or krypton for enhanced thermal insulation.
- Low-E Coatings: Microscopically thin, transparent coatings applied to glass surfaces to reduce heat transfer, reflecting radiant heat while allowing visible light to pass through.
- Tempered and Laminated Glass: For safety and security applications, meeting various building code requirements.
- Hardware: Functional components such as locks, hinges, and operators are typically constructed from durable metals like brass, stainless steel, or aluminum, finished to complement the window's overall design and ensure smooth operation.
The construction methods employed by Kolbe Windows & Doors prioritize structural integrity and performance. For instance, their wood windows often feature robust joinery techniques to ensure stability and prevent air and water infiltration. Frame designs are engineered to accommodate various glazing options and weatherstripping systems. The integration of advanced technologies, such as high-performance glass and robust sealing systems, contributes to improved thermal performance, sound dampening, and resistance to the elements.
Kolbe's commitment to customization allows for a wide array of design possibilities within each window category. Whether it's the complex geometries of architectural shapes, the seamless integration of corner windows, or the space-saving functionality of folding windows, the underlying construction and material choices are geared towards meeting specific project demands and aesthetic visions.

Frame Options
Kolbe Windows & Doors offers a diverse range of frame options designed to complement the aesthetic of any home and meet various performance needs. These frame materials are integral to the structural integrity, energy efficiency, and overall visual appeal of their windows.
Frame Materials
- All-Lite Frame: This option is available for specific product lines, offering a minimalist design where the glass extends nearly to the edge of the frame. It maximizes the visible glass area, creating a sleek and modern appearance.
- Aluminum Clad Frame: For enhanced durability and weather resistance, Kolbe provides aluminum-clad frames. An extruded aluminum layer is applied to the exterior of the wood frame, offering robust protection against the elements while the interior can showcase the warmth of wood.
- Wood Frame: Kolbe's traditional wood frames offer natural beauty and excellent thermal performance. Available in a variety of wood species, these frames can be finished to match interior decor or painted to suit exterior color schemes.
- Veneered Frames: For certain product series, Kolbe offers veneered frames. These consist of a core material with a thin layer of premium wood applied as a veneer, providing the look of solid wood at a potentially more accessible price point or for specific design applications.
- Composite Frames: Kolbe also utilizes composite materials in their frame construction. These engineered materials are designed for strength, durability, and resistance to moisture and rot, offering a low-maintenance alternative to traditional materials.
Frame Features & Considerations
- Interior Finishes: Depending on the frame material chosen, Kolbe windows offer a range of interior finishing options, including natural wood, primed for painting, or pre-finished colors.
- Exterior Finishes: The exterior of Kolbe frames can be finished with durable paints, stains (for wood), and protective coatings (for aluminum clad) to withstand environmental exposure and maintain their appearance over time.
- Performance: The frame material plays a significant role in the thermal performance of a window. Wood and composite frames generally offer good insulation, while aluminum clad frames provide the durability of metal with the interior benefits of wood.
- Style Integration: Frame profiles and finishes are designed to integrate seamlessly with the various window styles offered, such as Awning, Casement, Double Hung, Single Hung, Sliding Horizontal, Architectural Shapes, Corner, Hopper, Tilt-Turn, Radius, and Folding windows.
Glass Options
Kolbe Windows & Doors offers a variety of glass options to enhance the performance, aesthetics, and comfort of their windows. These options cater to different needs, from energy efficiency and noise reduction to UV protection and privacy.
The core glass offering is typically standard clear glass. However, Kolbe provides several enhancements and specialized glass types:
-
Low E Glass (Low Emissivity): This is a popular choice for energy efficiency. Low E coatings are microscopically thin and virtually invisible, but they significantly improve a window's thermal performance. They work by reflecting infrared light (heat) while allowing visible light to pass through.
- LoE-366®: This is a high-performance, all-weather, triple-silver-coated low E glass designed to provide excellent solar control and thermal insulation in all climates. It blocks a significant portion of solar heat gain in the summer while keeping heat inside during the winter. It also reduces fading of interior furnishings by blocking harmful UV rays.
- LoE-270®: Another energy-efficient option, LoE-270® offers good solar control and thermal insulation, making it suitable for various climates. It also provides UV protection.
- LoE-170®: This option focuses on thermal insulation, allowing more solar heat to enter during the winter months, which can be beneficial in colder climates for passive solar heating. It also offers UV protection.
- Argon or Krypton Gas Fills: In addition to the low E coatings, many Kolbe windows can be ordered with insulated glass units filled with argon or krypton gas. These inert gases are denser than air and provide an additional layer of insulation between the glass panes, further improving energy efficiency. Krypton gas is denser than argon and offers even better insulating performance, especially in thinner air gaps.
-
Tinted Glass: For enhanced solar control and privacy, Kolbe offers tinted glass options. These tints reduce the amount of solar heat gain and glare entering the building, contributing to a cooler interior. Common tints include:
- Bronze
- Gray
- Green
- Blue
-
Obscure and Frosted Glass: These options are primarily for privacy.
- Obscure Glass: This type of glass diffuses light and provides a high level of privacy while still allowing natural light to enter. Different patterns are available for varying degrees of obscurity.
- Frosted Glass: Achieved through an etching process, frosted glass offers a similar level of privacy to obscure glass, with a smooth, satin-like finish.
- Tempered Glass: Tempered glass is a safety glass that is four to five times stronger than standard annealed glass. When it breaks, it shatters into small, relatively harmless pebble-like pieces, reducing the risk of injury. It is often required by building codes in specific locations, such as doors, bathrooms, and areas near the floor.
- Laminated Glass: Laminated glass consists of two or more panes of glass bonded together with a layer of plastic interlayer (typically PVB). This construction provides enhanced safety and security. If broken, the glass fragments adhere to the interlayer, keeping the pane intact and preventing dangerous shards from falling. Laminated glass also offers improved sound insulation and UV protection.
- Decorative Glass: Kolbe may offer decorative glass options for specific architectural styles or aesthetic preferences, which can include etched patterns or specialized finishes.
These glass options can often be combined to achieve specific performance goals. For instance, a window can be ordered with a Low E coating, gas fill, and a specific tint, or with tempered glass for safety and a Low E coating for energy efficiency.
